Teen Night at the Caldwell YMCA

Teen Night

Are you a teenager in middle or high school with nothing to do this Saturday night, January 12, 2012? Every month Teen Leaders of The Caldwell Family YMCA put together an event for teens and tweens after hours at the YMCA.

Teen night includes: sumo suits, bounce houses, boxing matches, dance offs, Nintendo WII, Play Station 2, pool, fitness area, Rock Climbing, dodge ball, full court basketball/volleyball games, food and concessions, many different themes, and many more surprises to come.

Teen Leaders encourage teens to come to have fun and to socialize with their friends on a Saturday night. Teen Night is loaded with fun, games, and music for active people. You are welcome to come and just sit or walk around while talking to your friends as well.

Teen Leaders also hold contests for each school. Which ever schools have the most attendance at teen night anyone from that school gets in for free at the next teen night, but they must present an id card showing that you attend that school.

We also have interviewed a few attendees of past teen nights, to get their point of view on what they thought of teen night and their favorite activities.

News Release via ITD

The following projects are part of the GARVEE Transportation Program in southwest Idaho, which uses funds from Grant Anticipation Revenue Vehicle (GARVEE) bonds to expedite highway projects.

BOISE - Interstate 84, Cole Road to Broadway Avenue widening

Five weeks of east- and westbound interstate lane closures began Jan. 9 between the Orchard and Broadway interchanges.

The lane closures will be in effect from Jan. 9 until mid-February while crews work on overhead sign foundations. Motorists can also expect intermittent overnight restrictions, reducing traffic to two lanes from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.

 - Eastbound I-84 will be reduced to three lanes and one ramp lane between the Orchard and Vista interchanges.

- Westbound I-84 will be reduced to three lanes and one ramp lane between the Broadway and Vista interchanges.

The speed limit will be 55 mph during the five weeks of lane closures.

A map of the lane closures is available here.

The lane closures are part of a project to widen I-84 to four lanes in both directions between Cole/Overland and Broadway. The widening was completed in the summer of 2011.

Concrete Placing Co. Inc., of Boise, is the contractor on the $35.9 million project.

Sheriff: Caldwell man charged after pursuit begins in Star

News Release via the Ada County Sheriff's Office:

A Caldwell man is in custody after leading a Star Police deputy on a short pursuit to the driveway of his Caldwell home.

At about 6:50 p.m. Thursday, the deputy saw a 1989 Dodge pick-up truck with invalid registration driving west on Highway 20/26 (Chinden Boulevard) near the intersection of Star Road. The deputy initiated a traffic stop. The driver, later identified as James K. Luff, 41, of Caldwell, slowed down and began to pull the pick-up off to the side of the road. Before coming to a complete stop, however, Luff accelerated and drove back onto Highway 20/26.

The deputy followed Luff, with the lights and sirens on the patrol car activated. Luff did not stop but, instead, continue driving west into Canyon County at speeds between 45 and 55 miles per hour. Luff turned south onto Middleton Road and then east onto Linden Road. Canyon County Sheriff’s deputies responded to assist with the pursuit.

Luff stopped the pick-up truck in the driveway of his home in the 5100 block of East Linden. The 41-year-old exited the truck and immediately complied with all of the deputies’ commands. He was taken into custody without further incident at 7 p.m.

Luff was transported to the Canyon County Jail where he was booked on charges of eluding, driving under the influence, driving without privileges and an open container violation – all misdemeanors.

The pursuit lasted about 10 minutes, covered ninemiles at speeds between 45 and 55 miles per hour.

College of Idaho student rock climber featured on national television program

College of Idaho student rock climber featured on national television program

College of Idaho sophomore Matt Fultz is a rock climbing star. Fultz has been competing across the country since his early teens, and he became the first person from Idaho to win the USA Climbing Junior Nationals in 2004. Fultz put climbing on the back burner for a couple of years while he starred in football and track at Columbia High School (Nampa), but his dedication to the sport has reached new heights at C of I. He remains undefeated in Idaho competition and qualified for his first World Cup event last year.

This weekend, Fultz will be featured on The Real Winning Edge, a television program about young athletes overcoming obstacles and making positive life decisions. Fultz’s episode will air nationally Saturday, Jan. 21 on FOX (8 a.m. on KTRV Channel 12 in the Treasure Valley). Fultz’s segment will focus on climbing as well as dealing with peer pressure. Fultz will be introduced by professional skateboarder Christian Hosoi, who has fought to overcome the drug and legal problems that once hindered his career.

“One of the struggles of rock climbing is there is a lot of drug use in the sport, especially smoking pot,” Fultz said. “I’ve avoided that, and I would like to be a positive influence for the local climbing community. I’m hoping the show reflects that.”
